Tactics are the building blocks of chess. A tactical mistake can lose a game instantly. If you want to climb the rating ladder, you must train your tactical vision.
The best way to improve tactics is through repetition. Solve puzzles daily until forks, pins, and skewers become second nature. Your brain will start to recognize patterns without conscious thought.
When you are looking for tactics, look at forcing moves first: checks, captures, and threats. These moves narrow down your opponent's options and often lead to a winning combination. If you don't see a tactic immediately, look for checks and captures.
Once you see a tactical idea, don't stop calculating too early. Many players see a fork and play it, only to realize the opponent has a counter-fork. Calculate to the end of the variation before you play it.
